Bothwell: Player Experiences

If you were wondering what it’s like to attend Bothwell, or just curious as to what it’s all about; we’ve asked some of our players to sum up their experience. It’s just a snippet and a lot of them wished they could write more, but we hope it gives you an insight into the magical world of Bothwell School of Witchcraft.

Bothwell was, in short, life changing. When I attended the Inaugural Run in August 2017, I was nervous and running low on friends. Since then, I've gained not just friends, but a family that stretches across the world. I've since attended Bothwell in April 2018 and August 2018, and plan to attend April 2019. I literally cannot imagine my life without these events dotted in my future. The events themselves have always been fun, and more and more immersive as they expand the lore with the extra props and work that goes into each successive run. It simply cannot be summed up in 100 words.

At Bothwell a lot of different people coming from all over the world are united by their love of magic, and I understood it is only about fun, respect, friendship and love, for me this aspect was even more important than the amusement of the game itself. I was really scared of role-playing for the first time, but this feeling quickly faded away as I arrived at the castle where I was directly welcomed as a member of the family. This game allows you to learn about witchcraft as well as role-play, you won’t be judged and you will learn a lot from others. Now I know the basis of role-playing I will not be afraid to try others, because it’s already getting addictive!

Bothwell was the most intense thing I have ever experienced. I was completely immersed in the story and consumed by the drama. I never expected that I would fall so deeply into the world on my first role playing experience, but it speaks to the excellent organization, planning, character development, and improv skills of everyone involved. For anyone considering doing something like this (even if you’ve never heard of role-playing before), I would say go for it! It was so much fun, so intense, and so immersive that it felt like an entire year had passed in 3 days.

I was lucky enough to get on board with Bothwell School of Witchcraft when they first launched their Kickstarter campaign. Ever since, I have not regretted becoming a member of this brilliant community. The friends I have made playing characters through crazy stories and lessons are friends for life. Most of us met in the superbly organised pre-game online which lead to weeks of amazing plotting. The organisers are fun and friendly too, and always available if you need help.

Each event is new and exciting, with more opportunities for players new and old. These people will be in my life for a long time, this group is bringing real magic in and out of games!
